    Backyard Birdsong Identification

    Have you ever wondered if that “tweet” is from a cardinal or a chickadee? Join this class to learn the language spoken by our feathered friends. Our birding expert, Michele Grzenda, will start with a few basic bird songs as a reference, then add to your repertoire with repetition and practice. You’ll learn the types of sound birds make and why they make them, and explore common bird songs heard in MA. Each class will focus on approximately 10-15 different birds.

    Did you know chocolate comes from a fruit? Join Tom Rogan of Sudbury’s own Goodnow Farms Chocolate to learn more about how single origin chocolate is sourced and made. Most chocolate is candy made with cheap additives by large multinational corporations using inexpensive cacao. But, Goodnow Farms single origin chocolate is a food made with fine flavor, directly sourced cacao beans. Tom will guide you through the entire process, from how he and his wife Monica personally source their cacao beans from farmers in Latin America to how they make their award-winning chocolate by hand in their Sudbury chocolate kitchen. You’ll then taste the flavor differences for yourself as Tom leads you on a tasting of several of Goodnow Farms single origin bars. This class will forever change the way you look at chocolate!     Have you ever wanted to learn how to fish? Now’s your chance, let the MassWildlife Angler Education Program be your guide. We’ll have equipment on hand for use, as well as terminal tackle, and live bait. You’ll learn the basics, from casting out to baiting up, and the best part - you’ll actually be able to fish. So come try your hand at this great pastime, guaranteed to catch some fun! Pre-registration is required. Please note: This is NOT a kid’s program. It is a program for people of all ages that want to learn how to fish. If you are 15 and younger you must be accompanied by an adult. Please complete ONE (1) registration per family (up to 5 people).

    The high cost of long-term care can wipe out a family’s life savings in a short period of time. Unfortunately, many families are faced with this situation, finding themselves at the mercy of an under-funded government Medicaid system with limited choices. Recent legislative changes have created many questions surrounding planning techniques: How can I protect my home? What is the penalty for giving assets away? Are my assets protected if I put them in a trust? When is long-term care insurance worthwhile to consider? What if my loved one is already in a nursing home, can they still protect their assets? All of these questions and more will be clearly answered in this very important class.

  • Plant ID Guided Nature Walk - Mt. Misery

    PLEASE NOTE THE DATE HAS CHANGED! THE WALK WILL NOW TAKE PLACE ON SAT. MAY 2ND, RAIN DATE SUN. MAY 3RD. Join Jeff Adams, an avid outdoor enthusiast & naturalist, for these highly interactive nature walks. The focus will be on basic identification characteristics primarily looking at native species, including possibly locating a plant Native Americans used to supposedly cure mental illness, one they used to wash their hands, one they called “Green Stick”, a few best identified using your noses, several that are edible and medicinal along with some non-natives too. Discussion will include specifics on native vs. non-native along with some fun and interesting natural history. Participants on the walk will be provided a Glossary, Bibliography, and Plant List with common names, scientific names and family. All are welcome but please, no pets on this organized walk.   • Pysanky Club: Explore Natural Dyes

    This workshop offers an opportunity to learn the traditional art of Pysanky from a native Ukrainian while exploring the beauty of natural dyes. Using the wax-resist method with a "kistka," beeswax, and candle, participants will create intricate designs on real chicken eggs. You will experiment with natural dyes derived from spring flowers and berries and compare their muted, organic hues to vibrant aniline dyes. Perfect for both beginners and experienced Pysanky creators, this class combines tradition with a touch of nature’s artistry. Emptied and cleaned chicken eggs and an assortment of dyes will be provided. Children ages 6+ are welcome to attend when accompanied by an adult. . Minors must be registered with a registered parent/guardian.
  • Real Estate Investing Workshop

    Real estate investing can be lucrative if you know what you are doing, but it can also set you up for failure if you don’t. The trouble is that many new investors don’t know where or how to invest. Participants will learn how to find a property that can be an additional income stream and how to avoid getting into trouble with tenants. Along with learning how to buy an income-generating rental property in this competitive market, we will discuss MA laws that every landlord needs to know to protect themselves. We review proven tips on being a thoughtful and respected landlord and financing and property maintenance costs.
  • SAT Advanced Bootcamp

    The ADVANCED SAT class is intended for students who have previously scored at least 1300 on the SAT. During this eight-session online class, students will focus on the most challenging question types, the most difficult content areas, and the most important strategies for high-scoring students. This class will provide rigorous practice for the Reading/Writing and Math sections of the SAT. All students will receive Open Door Education's guides to the Reading/Writing and Math sections of the SAT, recordings of each class session, and access to two free practice tests.
  • Seed Starting & Greenhouse Tour

    Join us at Codman Community Farms to learn everything you need to know for starting and nurturing successful seeds. Starting your own seeds is a rewarding way to gain access to unique plant varieties and save money on your garden. We’ll tour Codman’s greenhouse and gardens and cover everything from the first sprouts to moving day including watering, ideal temperatures, pinching and hardening off. Participants will also take home a 4 pack of nasturtiums.

    Come take a guided nature walk with a local photography enthusiast, Christine Goddard, at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge. See the spring wildlife and nature come to life. If you like to take pictures, bring your camera for some tips on how to take better wildlife and landscape photos. No photography experience necessary. Any camera will do, including your smartphone.   • Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music: Adult Concert Band and String Ensemble

    Winter/Spring 2026 Adult Concert Band & String Ensemble Don’t just LISTEN to the music, PLAY!! Join our adult concert band or string ensemble and experience the joy of making instrumental music with others. Haven’t played your trumpet (flute, clarinet, violin, cello…) in 30 years? We have some members who came back to their instruments after 50, 60 and even 70 years! Never played an instrument? We’ll help you figure out how to get started, get connected with a teacher, and in a few weeks sit in with our group. It is never too late; over half of our members started their instruments as adults! Our members range in age from 20-something to 90-something, and from beginner/novice to quite advanced in playing ability — all are welcome! No auditions required. Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is an organization for all adults, no matter the skill level, who love music and want to be involved in playing music with others in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. Our Winter/Spring session for our band and string ensemble begins on January 21, and continues through May 22, 2026. New members can join at any time.
