This class will be taught in a workshop format, utilizing timed prompts and other techniques; and each of the six sessions will explore a different aspect of effective storytelling, everything from developing a memorable plot-line to creating unforgettable characters. The genres covered will depend on what students are interested in.

In today’s world, many individuals know or have been told they “need to write a book.” This course covers the nonfiction publishing process, including the creation, positioning, and marketing of a professional work. Participants will learn how to develop a compelling book concept, craft a proposal that aligns with publishers’ expectations, and understand the publishing landscape. The class also presents the steps needed to set their work up for success, including platform development, launch planning, and ongoing marketing strategies. By the end of the session, attendees will gain the practical guidance needed to create a well-positioned publication that enhances their visibility and contributes to their broader career objectives.

This course will outline the various options available from writing query letters to agents and publishers to signing on with self-publishing companies like Ingram-Sparks. The instructor will provide an overview of the industry today and give her recommendations as to how best to negotiate this ever-changing field and avoid the expensive mistakes many first-time authors make. Information about AI scams targeting writers will also be discussed.
