Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music: Adult Concert Band and String Ensemble
Don’t just LISTEN to the music, PLAY!! Join our adult concert band or string ensemble and experience the joy of making instrumental music with others. Haven’t played your trumpet (flute, clarinet, violin, cello…) in 30 years? We have some members who came back to their instruments after 50 and 60 and even 70 years! Never played an instrument? We’ll help you figure out how to get started, get connected with a teacher, and in a few weeks sit in with our group. It is never too late; over half of our members started their instruments as adults! Our members range in age from 20-something to 90-something, and from beginner/novice to quite advanced in playing ability — all are welcome!Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is an organization for all adults, no matter the skill level, who love music and want to be involved in playing music with others in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. For more information, visit our website, www.svnhm.org, or call Diane Muffitt, 978-261-5065. (New members please contact Diane before registering.) Season runs from 9/18/24 through 12/18/24. No rehearsal 10/2, 11/20 (moved to Monday 11/18 beginning at 7:30 pm), 11/27 and 12/11.CONCERT INFORMATION: 12/7 afternoon at L-S

Introduction to Fiction - Art, Craft, and Practice
Writing and Humanities
This class offers an introduction to the essential elements of fiction. We will use example texts from established writers to discuss how these elements can be used to enhance our own work. Students can expect to start the class by focusing on generating work, after which we will focus on ways to revise our stories. Our work will focus on the Short Story form, but many of the ideas and practices will translate to writing longer works. We will be workshopping stories in progress, so students should be prepared to share and discuss drafts with the class.

The Art of Being a Person; Words from Emerson, Shakespeare and other Thoughtful Writers
Writing and Humanities
The readings supplied for this course will introduce participants to the work of several famous writers. Excerpts from Emerson’s essays, Shakespeare’s plays, and the writings of Margaret Fuller, Walt Whitman, and others, with annotations by the instructor, pertain to the philosophy of everyday life. The participants’ written responses to questions about the texts will prepare us for in-person discussions of aspirations, circumstances, relationships, feelings, and resources.
