Historical markers commemorate historical people, places, and events. In this class, we’ll tackle some big questions: What do these markers tell us? What do they leave out? Who decides, and why? Looking at historical markers in Massachusetts and beyond, we will explore controversies, tell stories, and discover the choices that communities make as they remember their histories.
Michael Rodriguez is a librarian by training, holding a master’s degree in library and information studies. He is a lead strategist at Lyrasis, a nonprofit organization that supports enduring access to the world’s academic and cultural heritage. Michael is passionate about information literacy and public access to knowledge. He has contributed more than 10,000 edits to Wikipedia over the past 10 years, creating more than 300 original articles and uploading more than 200 free images. He lectures and publishes widely and teaches educational seminars on many topics.
