Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music: Adult Concert Band and String Ensemble
Don’t just LISTEN to the music, PLAY!! Join our adult concert band or string ensemble and experience the joy of making instrumental music with others. Haven’t played your trumpet (flute, clarinet, violin, cello…) in 30 years? We have some members who came back to their instruments after 50 and 60 and even 70 years! Never played an instrument? We’ll help you figure out how to get started, get connected with a teacher, and in a few weeks sit in with our group. It is never too late; over half of our members started their instruments as adults! Our members range in age from 20-something to 90-something, and from beginner/novice to quite advanced in playing ability — all are welcome!Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is an organization for all adults, no matter the skill level, who love music and want to be involved in playing music with others in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. Fall Guided Walk: Mt. Misery Landscape & History
This guided walk will be led by Ron McAdow, author of Imaging the Past at Mount Misery. The group will walk 2.3 miles, including moderate gradients. Participants will learn about the colonial-era sawmill, the ice-age land-forms, the visits of Henry Thoreau, the ponds, and the Sudbury River.

Cold-Process Soap - Two Part Class

Calling all Soapers!! Make your own cold-process soap. This is a "hands-on” class. You will learn the basics about cold process soapmaking. Each participant will choose from a variety of scents and additives (all natural) to create a high-quality, long-lasting soap. This class will provide you with all the knowledge and skills needed to craft your own soap. DAY 1: 6:30-8:00. DAY 2: 6:30-6:45 On day 1 you will make your soap with your choice of scents (Lavender, Lavender Peppermint, Peppermint, Tea Tree, citrus or no scent) and your choice of additives (GF oatmeal, red clay, coffee grounds=kitchen soap or no additive). On day 2, you will unmold your soap and cut it into bars. All materials and worksheets will be provided. Please do not wear your best clothing. An apron and/or an old shirt will be the best option. Please let the instructor know if you have any skin allergies or allergies to essential oils. Women in their first trimester of pregnancy should not take this class. Handmade soaps are an excellent gift or an awesome gift to yourself!

Fermented Pickle Workshop

SCHEDULE CHANGE: THIS CLASS IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29. Come show yourself some love and learn how to make probiotic pickles for your health and happy taste buds. At this small class on food preservation, you will learn how to pickle anything! Emily Makrez, owner of F-Word Farm & educator on all things fermenting, farming, foraging related, will show you how to pickle what is in season to make the most of your veggies, capture gut-healthy microbes and prevent food waste. This will include the basic science of fermentation and methods so you will leave with the knowledge and confidence to be able to safely ferment practically anything! Leave knowing the difference between a vinegar pickle and a fermented pickle. You will make your own fermented pickles (e.g. carrot or beet pickles) and take home your very own jar. We will talk about the benefits of lacto-fermented food, how they are a benefit to our overall health. Samples will be provided!

French Macaron Basics

Come to a demonstration and tasting course to learn the basic preparation of French Macarons. The course will begin with tasting pre-made samples and then the instructor will demonstrate the process of macaron making. Students can help participate and take home some macarons made in class as well as recipes and tips for trying at home.

Fused Glass Workshop: Sushi Serving Set

Learn the basics of glass fusing while having fun playing with glass shapes, colors, and textures. First learn how to use glass powders, frits, glass beads, and stringers. Then design and create your own sushi set, featuring two small plates and one large serving dish, perfect to serve sushi, cheese and crackers or desserts. Your instructor will fire your creations in his own kiln. They will be available at the Lincoln Sudbury within two weeks. Safety note: Students must wear closed toe shoes. Mastering Your Digital Camera

DATE CHANGE: THIS CLASS WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAYS, OCTOBER 9- NOVEMBER 6. NO CLASS OCTOBER 23 The digital camera has revolutionized photography. This course is for the beginning photographer with an SLR or mirrorless camera My goal is to help you develop your photographic vision by teaching you how to go beyond automatic settings on your camera. We will learn how aperture, shutter speed and ISO can be manipulated to yield creative images. We will learn about RAW vs. JPEG images, white balance, depth of field, and exposure. Hands-on exercises on exposure metering and autofocus will give you a better understanding of your camera's capabilities. As you learn to take control of your camera, we will discuss the basics of composition and how to express your vision. We will also explore how to display your images through print and digital medium. The course will consist of handouts, didactic presentations, and individualized opportunities to practice with your camera in the classroom. We will plan one or two optional field trips on weekends (or weekdays if you prefer) to put into practice what we have learned in the classroom. Weekly assignments will be submitted via the Internet prior to each class so we can critique our images as a group. The course is for four weeks and is limited to 7 individuals to maximize interaction with the instructor and other members of the class. Course requirements include a digital SLR or mirrorless camera, access to the Internet, Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program), and enthusiasm. Optional accessories include a tripod, polarizing filter, and shutter release cable.

Polka Dot Pysanky Eggs - The Krapanky

The Krapanky - Polka Dot Egg workshop, where you'll be introduced to the traditional wax-resist method of coloring eggs, as we explore various tools and techniques to adorn eggs with wax dots. Using real chicken eggs, melted beeswax, and vibrant color dyes, participants will create stunning polka dot designs. Perfect for children as young as 5 years old, kids are encouraged to join accompanied by adults.

Private Music Lessons - Fall

Private music lessons enable participants to grow musically at an individual pace, study advanced techniques on their instruments and begin to express themselves through improvisation. Lessons are given in 8-week sessions in your choice of format: in-person or online. Lessons take place after school, weekday evenings or Saturday mornings. Before registering, please send us an email at adult.ed@lsrhs.net to determine the availability of the instructor. There is a $30 administrative fee per 8-week session. A portion of the administrative fee will be donated to LS Friends of Music. No Senior/Staff Discount. We offer private music lessons in: Cello, Clarinet, Drum set, Euphonium, Flute, Guitar, Marimba, Oboe, Percussion, Piano, Saxophone, Song Writing, String Bass, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, Voice. Snowflake Craft: Wheat Straw Decoration

Grown in several countries around the globe, the tea plant yields numerous varieties of teas, ranging from the commonly known black tea to the exotic white, yellow and pu-erh tea. Throughout history, the innocuous tea leaf has sparked world trade, united cultures and even started rebellions. In modern times, tea has become recognized for its health benefits and has become widely accepted as a symbol of peace and harmony. Join us to gain an understanding of many aspects of the world of specialty teas including an overview of the numerous varieties of tea, the history of tea and its place in cultures around the world. Zentangle Letter Forms: Alpha Zen

Using letters as a starting off point, go beyond the basics of Zentangle and create amazing art. Letterforms may be the “string,” or provide the focal point of the composition. Previous experience with the Zentangle method is recommended. Take the process farther, or stay close to the basics, it is up to you. Relax, focus, trust your creativity and have fun.

Zentangle®: Basics & Beyond

This course introduces you to the basics of Zentangle® then takes you beyond to create more challenging work. Zentangle is a method of meditative art making using "tangles," or structured patterns using "elemental" strokes: dots, lines, curves, and orbs. Each creation is personal and allows you to relax, increase hand-eye coordination, and connect with others in a creative, positive, online atmosphere. No previous art experience or skill is required. The amazing part comes at the end when all of the work is viewed together in a class “mosaic.” Come be a part of making beautiful things together. All sessions are recorded for later viewing, you do not need to be present at the live session to participate.
